if you buy a domain for a website and create a sub domain as GhosT said then you must set it to redirect as your serverip  make sure your host can support nameservers some dont let you redirect your sub domain to another site :[

i believe there free ones out there that has there site name in it :[
but its free!

most domains get expensive
if your only using it for the Nameserver then i sugest getting a free 1 because why would you pay $15-30 a year for a nameserver without having a website?

Domains are hardly expensive nowadays. Godaddy and the like will charge around $8/£4 (give or take) for a year. You then use a free service such as zoneedit to handle all the DNS functions and boom. Hardly a bank breaker.

If you register a domain with goaddy they host the DNS for free as well as give you 1 email address at your domain. also for free.

I host ircmojo.net at godaddy, it costs me about $8/yr for the domain and about $4/mo for web/email hosting with included 100 email addresses.
