Anopes shutting down
« on: April 12, 2007, 09:00:22 PM »

What the hell is going on...

I have an Unreal 3.2.6 and Anope 1.7.18 running on a 64Bit OpenSUSE 10.0 system. After some days, the Anopes show this:

›18:18:28‹ *** Global -- from irc.PenguinFriends.org: No response from services.PenguinFriends.org[127.0.0.1], closing link

And in the logs they write this (there was no event next to the shutdown, the last event was an automatic identification over an hour before):

[Apr 12 18:23:50 2007] Read error from server: Success (error num: 0)
[Apr 12 18:23:50 2007] [^Bbs_fantasy_ext^B]: Module Unloaded
[Apr 12 18:23:50 2007] [cs_appendtopic] Unloaded successfully

[Apr 12 18:23:50 2007] NickServ: ns_joinhelpchan.so: Module Unloaded.
[Apr 12 18:23:50 2007] Unloading module cs_forbidunreg.so
[Apr 12 18:23:50 2007] OperServ: os_forceid: module unloaded.
[Apr 12 18:23:50 2007] [^Bos_notinchanlist^B] Unloading module...
[Apr 12 18:23:50 2007] [os_restrict.so] module unloaded
[Apr 12 18:23:50 2007] Unloading os_svskill.so
[Apr 12 18:23:50 2007] Unloading os_tssync..so

This is the third time this happens, but the Anopes were running several days, I think there is no specific event which cause this error. So I don't know any solution for this problem. Help!!! :-/

This can happen if you have a very small network and very little activity, try increasing the ping frequency in your ircd conf file.

Well, I set it to 180 before it was 90, so I'll see what happens the next hours.^^

Ok, it doesn't help anything. And it isn't that the services are not in use. As i saw in the debug mode, the services go down, when they are sending the databases to the mysql-server... i think this process is NOT running in background, so the services get a ping timeout, when updating the databases.

Why i believe in this theory:
The last 3 times the services crashed was when updating the databases and the server having a high load because of other processes. Then the update of the dbs needs a long time (the services are not reachable in irc at this time, though they are online). After the services exceed the ping time of the server class, they went offline with the no response arrow some posts above.

So can the developers please fix this issue in the next version? It would be a great help!

Armadillo are you using SQL? If so comment out the SQL stuff then rehash and see if that helps with the crashes.

Armadillo, that is a known issue. It's on the todo list to be fixed. The only work around right now it to disable sql.

I'm already testing this and I hope it'll help, but I WANT TO USE MySQL! mysql is named as a feature of anope, but it doesn't work correctly, that sucks!!! :(

You are also using the DEVELOPMENT version of Anope, which means that you must expect bugs/substandard coding. Usage of development software in the PC field is all the same, you can't expect the "bleeding edge" software to be 100% bug free .. sorry, it doesn't work that way.

If you want to use a more stable sql code, then use 1.6 or wait until the sql code for 1.7 has stabilized. This is the same choice everyone faces .. not just you.

Well, if something does not work and it doesn't work... I don't add it to a programm, until it runs in most cases. Ok your thing  what you add in the new versions, but that can't be the right way.

It's a pity that it runs in the 1.6 versions but not in the new ones. And I can't use the old ones, because most of the modules are for the 1.7 version so the only way is to get it work on myself, take the old ones and can't run 90% of the modules or to code my own services... what a bad list of possibilities... :(

You are not alone either. I too want a better working sql system but I too must wait.

What you seem to fail to understand is advancement in features requires a change in code. Anytime you change the code you run the risk of breaking it. That is the sole reason for having a development branch, which is to test your changes. It just so happens that the changes we coded more or less broke an already bad system.

All you can do is wait for the next version and all the sad faces and whining don't help. You must wait, there is no other option.

Everything that needs to be said on this subject has been said, this thread is now locked.
