how to upgrade to a newer version of Anope Services?
« on: September 22, 2008, 07:37:53 PM »

please try to give more detailed instructions then:
"simply download and install the new version as normal. As long as you use the same run directory, by default ~/services and C:\Program Files\Anope on Windows, all you need to do is restart services."
(i didn't installed them in c by the way...)
i've download (the new version) "anope-1.7.22.tar.gz" zip file and unzipped it.
then searched for some install instrucions for windows.
found in \docs\win32.txt
these are the headlines there:
1) Building the Source
2) Installation
3) Compiling Modules
4) Other compile options
5) Credits
the word "upgrade" ,for some reason ,not even mentioned there.
the Installation section isn't any of a help and i don't remember how i installed Anope in the first place.
Please help...

on windows you probably installed using the windows installer.. very few people will compile anope themselves on windows, most just use the installer provided by us.
maybe a small paragraph should be added about upgrading, though when using the installer, i assume it automatically overwrites the older files.

Since you are on windows, I recommend you stick with .21 for a little while longer.. .22 has issues on some windows systems.

As the windows installer is versioned, the previous version should be uninstalled PRIOR to the installation of the new version.

In theory, this should work without issue as the data directory would be left untouched by the uninstaller if it has been modified from the original installation and the new installation would as you say overwrite the changed files.

But I'd urge the back up of the "data" directory, complete uninstallation of the previous version, installation of the new and replacement of the databases from the data directory back into the 'new' data directory.

i see what you'r saying guys and i chose to stick with my current version like Viper said
i will also want to save your instructions so ill be able to use them in the future.
i backup frequently so there is no need to worry about file lost.
in addition i would like to know what is the name of the file which installs the services.
i meen...
i have these folders:
data,docs,include,lang,src
and these files:
.BANNER,Changes.conf,Changes,Config,configure,install-script,config.guess,configure.in,Makefile.in,install.js,Changes.lang,aclocal.m4,anope.m4,Config.bat,Changes.mysql,install.sh,config.sub,version.log,makefile.inc.win32,Makefile.win32
and it doesn't look like these are the files that should be copied at all.

those files and folders are part of the anope source code distribution and when using the precompiled windows version, they shouldn't even appear..

You should erase them and forget about their existance until you move your server to Unix software.
As it has beed said - use the windows installer, not the source code distribution that you already have.

those files and folders are part of the anope source code distribution and when using the precompiled windows version, they shouldn't even appear..

The Changes.* files will show up on a pre-compiled release but the others are cleaned as part of the build docs.
