Title: Limit on/off toggle of vhost?
Post by: nyghtwulf on September 17, 2006, 02:53:13 AM
Im just wondering if it is at all possible via some config option/module to make it so that if a user has a vhost set to their nick, it is automaticly enabled when they ident to nickserv (which i know this is possible) but also so they can not turn the vhost off. For users without a vhost, they would just have a the standard hidden hostmask (i have +x default set and restricted)

I would like to enable users have vhosts (as many others users would like this) but the other ops on the network i admin dont want the possible hassel of people turning off their vhost and evading channel bans. I figure if there is a way to lock it on, then this issue would be moot.

I think if i removed the hs_off module that would do the trick.. but im not 100% sure on that..

Removing hs_off would indeed remove the /hostserv off command. IMO, a user has the right to choose not to hide their host ... afterall it _is_ their host.

However ban evasion is still easy to do regardless of hostmasks, there are many ways to get around it. The easiest way is to use an unregistered nick, which will not have a custom vhost, but a generic vhost. There is also bouncing and using proxies that will make the evading user even more elusive. It's very possible and quite easy for a person that has been on IRC for only a few months to completely evade a ban and the ops not even know it. So you see .. it's already a moot point. :(
