Title: Coloring nicks of services
Post by: Federico on February 09, 2011, 05:20:00 PM
Hello.

What can I do to color the nicks of services? Something like: NickServ (like DALnet services)

Is it possible?

Thanks!

PD: sorry for my poor english!

For the record, DALnet does not color their services nicks. If you see them in color, it's your client/script doing the coloring.

On DALnet I see the nicks colored on Status windows (using mIRC). But with Anope, the color is the default for nicks on notices....

I say again, if you see colored nicks, it's mIRC/script. mIRC has 20 different events that can use any of 16 predefined colors. Scripts can enhance the color usage even father. the text color of normal text is different than the text color of notices, server notices, informational output, etc.

To see the different colors and events, click the button that looks like a box of crayons/markers.

And for the record DALnet in no way colours the nicks of ANY user not even NickServ. Tested and verified in various clients including mIRC and xchat.

As per IRC rfc "standards" no markup is allowed in nicknames.
While many ircd's do not strictly follow the rfc anymore, anope - having to be compatible with as many ircd's as possible - does. As far as I am aware, no ircd currently supported by anope (with maybe one exception) allows colored nicks.. and if there was such an ircd, that would be a feature of the ircd that will remain unsupported by anope.

That said, DALnet does NOT color its nickserv client.. any color you might see on nickserv is added by your client.

Not the only case, works on InspIRCd and UnrealIRCd too. In fact I cannot think of an IRCd that it doesn't work on but then I haven't tried them all.

for what it's worth, coloring nicks (or using bold/underline/reverse) will most likely break most alias definitions (unless one specifies the codes in the exact same order as defined in the nick, which I know UnrealIRCd supports can't say for the rest).

Then there's the simple fact that not everyone uses the same color scheme in their IRC client as the admin - while most would have black text on a white background, the default blue (color 10 in mIRC, iirc) is damn near unreadable on a black b/g
