Title: backing up IRC shell

is there a specific way to back up an IRC shell or does the shell provider do this for us  ?

Depends who your provider is.

I rsync copies of my stuff onto a local box here each day and back that up to tape weekly.

Some providers back up your stuff for you whereas others don't.

I personally have a server here which I download my back ups to automatically.

Here you go, this should tell you how to use "rsync" to backup your stuff.

This also depends on the shell provider you have, unless you have your own server. In which case, you should install the stuff for it. =P
