Trouble registering nicknames
« on: February 02, 2010, 06:08:59 PM »

Hi,

I have a problem with registering nicknames on my network. Since a week or two 60% of the users who wants to register a nickname gets the message that they may not register thier nickname.

I dont know what the problem is right now because the config looks quite normally. Is there a setting or what to say which name can or cannot be registered?

Kind regards,

Rick

About a week or two ago did you give an admin/oper access to Anope (OperServ OPER, ADMIN, or root access) who has a SHORT nick, say 3 chars or less?

If so, or well if not too, try commenting out RestrictOperNick

If you're protecting the opernicks then anyone trying to use a P will be blocked.

To test this, can you register the username "chaz" without issue?

Now I can, but the problem is that it is not all names that cannot be registered. I'll monitor it for now to see if it helps

Yes, you said that if I add a user on the staff list (in this case P) anyone that is trying to use a P cant register that nick. But what we had is for example anyone using | couldnt register or even a name like Jess couldn't

You should be aware that /os staff only lists the display nicks of the nickgroups that have operserv access.. the other nicks in those groups have the same rights and the same protection is applied to them.

So if "P" also has nick "A" and "J" in his group those would be unusable as well..

And nicks with < 3 chars should be outlawed imho..

Ok, well I dropped the single char names now, it only was P and Q. So we are going to see how it works for now. I will let you know.

Ok, i got the error again. A chatter wants to register the nick Patrick|Gone but thats not possible.

He gets the message:

(its dutch) Nickname Patrick|Gone mag niet geregistreerd worden.

Which is Nickname Patrick|Gone may not be registered.

This thread is ridiculous, lets end it now.

The first reply from Jobe to your question told you WHY this is happening, yet you see more interest in arguing so let me make it even more simple.

Quote
# RestrictOperNick [OPTIONAL]
#     Forbids the registration of nicks that contain nick with services
#     access. So if Tester is a Services Oper, for example, You can't
#     register NewTester or Tester123 unless you are an IRC operator.
#     IMPORTANT: Remember that you have to be an ircop if you want to
#                register the root's nick when setting up Anope for the
#                the first time.
#RestrictOperNicks

You have the above enabled, this is why nicks like P, Q, and Rick stop you registering poo, queen, and patrick.

Go and comment that back out again, and restart Anope.

The problem will disappear...
